Art & The History Of Art

Welcome to the department of the History of Art and Architecture – a department that is known for its lively teaching and for its friendly and supportive approach to students. Thousands of years later, technology has allowed man-kind to complicate this form of communication with computerized graphics arts programs, electronic display boards, and pocket sized smart phones that display photographs and videos, and stream digital content around the world.

With Griselda Pollock ‘s reading of French feminist psychoanalysis and in particular the writings of Julia Kristeva and Bracha L. Ettinger , as with Rosalind Krauss readings of Jacques Lacan and Jean-François Lyotard and Catherine de Zegher’s curatorial rereading of art, Feminist theory written in the fields of French feminism and Psychoanalysis has strongly informed the reframing of both men and women artists in art history.

Contributing to the broad foundation that constitutes a liberal arts education, departmental courses prepare students for graduate work leading to professional careers in the arts, including teaching and research, art criticism, museum curatorship, art conservation, museum directorship, and art appraising.
