Arts & Health refers mainly to arts activities that take place within the healthcare environment, providing new access and participation opportunities for artists, patients, health service staff and visitors. Legitimate research questions include whether certain art-based therapies are more or less effective than others, whether the impact of therapy can be tied to other important variables and preconditions, and whether health benefits are sustained or short term.
Physician and Educator Dr. Pippa Hall at The University of Ottawa, has been a palliative care physician for over ten years integrating arts into learning activities for pre-licensure students and in post graduate programs as well as in continuing professional development activities in nursing and spiritual care.

I presented a keynote for the Arts Based Research Network, Acadia, Creative Arts in Interdisciplinary Practice, A Pond of Interdisciplinary Opportunity, followed the next year by the course Problems in Education Research in Creativity (MEd Curriculum Studies) and a keynote for the Acadia School of Education Summer Institute, Navigating the Tides of Challenge and Change through the Creative Arts in Education and Research.
I established the Taskforce for Health and The Arts to guide the integration of The Arts into NSW’s healthcare system as a whole – including how we provide healthcare, create a sense of place in our health services and work with communities to keep people healthy and out of hospital.
