In partnership with USF Health, USF Contemporary Art Museum’s Art In Health program explores intersections between the arts and healthcare. The collection demonstrates Guy’s and St Thomas’ longstanding commitment towards transforming the healthcare environment; indeed it is through the collection that our commitment to arts and heritage began. Students hear about assessment and diagnostic practices, their strengths and limitations, and about traditions of evaluation and research methods ranging from medical to social sciences. Our students undertake projects in a broad range of media, alongside the study of concepts and theories that inform arts, health and wellbeing practice and research. The arts, including music, dance, theatre, visual arts and writing, are increasingly recognised as having the potential to support health and wellbeing. The policy and strategy was developed following a period of consultation and research with the arts and health sector, which included Vital Signs , a series of arts and health events that took place in October 2009. In 2015, ACT Health and artsACT jointly commissioned an independent evaluation of the arts program at the Canberra Hospital as a pilot project.
