Education in the arts is an integral part of the development of each human being. The work takes leadership, innovation, broad partnerships, and a dogged insistence that the arts are central to what we want students to learn. I’ve discovered in my 20+ years of teaching that the knowledge students gain in their study of the visual arts multiplies many times over as they learn of the world around themselves. These partnerships strengthen the Cultural Division’s ability and build its capacity to facilitate job opportunities and professional development and training for participants in the Arts Education Directory. The Data Project is designed to increase participation in arts education across the state by analyzing and reporting school-level data on arts education courses and grades 6 through 12 enrollment. Policy makers are quickly trying to integrate these skills into education standards.

Just a reminder that the research project took place in Newcastle, North Wales and Derbyshire and it will be exciting to share new research and thinking around the impact of the visual arts on the lived experiences of people with dementia. When students are learning about a culture in their English Language Arts class or their Social Studies class, it is the perfect time to teach those students about the art of that culture. Yet some districts have made great strides toward not only revitalizing the arts but also using them to reinvent schools. A classically trained mezzo-soprano, she’s now raising her voice to push arts education in Boston’s public schools. Collaboration is key to our faculty’s continual acknowledgement as a leader in education and research.
That’s why Create CA, the California Department of Education and the Arts Education Data Project have joined together to provide a new suite of tools to help increase participation and ensure student success in arts education. The survey is the most comprehensive assessment of arts education in New Jersey schools ever conducted and reflects data collected from 99 percent of New Jersey’s public schools.
