The various visual arts exist within a continuum that ranges from purely aesthetic purposes at one end to purely utilitarian purposes at the other. The two foundational texts are L. In Byzantine and Medieval art of the Western Middle Ages, much art focused on the expression of subjects about Biblical and religious culture, and used styles that showed the higher glory of a heavenly world, such as the use of gold in the background of paintings, or glass in mosaics or windows, which also presented figures in idealized, patterned (flat) forms.
One of the latter is Georges de la Tour – and the exhibition is worth going to if only to see his remarkable painting of The Cheat with the Ace of Clubs , c. late 1620s, Kimbell Art Museum , Fort Worth, Texas This echoes Caravaggio’s paintings of card sharps – although the people and clothing get a completely different treatment.
