State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE) consists of those persons at state education agencies whose responsibility is education in the arts (Dance, Media Arts, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts). This study provides essential data on student access, teacher training, assessment, and accountability in arts education in K-12 schools in Michigan, and lays the groundwork to drive future arts education policy decisions that effect all Michigan students.
For example, when students learn about the colonization of the Americas in their Social Studies class, the teacher can use this opportunity to teach about the art of a local Native American tribe or when students read Langston Hughes in their English Language Arts class the teacher can teach about the artist of the Harlem Renaissance.
It’s not lost on me that should Andre have been in a different secondary school, he might have had his spirit crushed, due to his academic challenges, and for this, I’m so thankful God led him to this school We didn’t know it at the time but it turned out to be a much bigger blessing than we could have imagined.
While researchers at the AEP admitted that art isn’t a panacea for what ails struggling schools, the study led them to believe it could be a valuable asset for teaching students of all ages — especially those in poor communities or who need remedial education.
