Kicking a ball around the yard during her teen years was the perfect way to relax after a long day at school. They’re exactly the kind of kids (whether they’re in Kindergarten or High School), who stand to benefit the most from activities like sports and arts. The typical student served by the Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation comes from a low-income neighborhood and attends a lackluster school. The arts in schools are the perfect way to help apply the more basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic. At the AWDF, we believe that we can and must leverage the transformational power of the arts if we are to achieve and to accelerate real social change. Having spent three hours at the school helping to man a bake sale, I also witnessed ongoing, but steadily-moving lines throughout the morning.
We live at US summer camps for 60 days each summer and understand the culture of each summer camp. Our Camp has a fully elective program, which allows campers to choose from traditional and not-so-traditional summer camp activities. In the 2011- 2012 school year, JHS 144’s performing arts team presented our community with the exciting production of Bye Bye Birdie! Billy arrives at what seems like a normal summer camp, but soon realizes there is something else going on. Beware of the sock assassin! During the STEM the students are able to use i-Ready, which is a program that will prepare them for the standardized test. These students typically live in low-income neighborhoods and attend academically struggling schools in grades K-12.
Arts programs tend to be a lot calmer (have you ever heard of an audience member being trampled to death during a performance of Fiddler on the Roof, Phantom of the Opera, or Wicked?). She and her twin sister, who also plays on the team, were lucky enough to grow up in a household where sports was always encouraged. The sports art activities that we promote transcend borders such as language, religion, and belief and are peaceful activities, like the Olympics, that deepen understanding through various interpersonal exchanges. Furthermore, our future doctors, lawyers, civil servants, engineers, and business people will benefit too, as they become more dimensional individuals with an understanding and appreciation of the arts – which can lead to their support of the artistic community and the overall survival of the arts for future generations.
The centre facilities include 2 Squash Courts, an Aerobic /Dance Studio, a Sports Hall capable of housing Badminton, Football, Netball etc. Nominations will be assessed by a panel or representatives from Falkirk Council, Falkirk District Sports Council and Falkirk & District Arts & Civic Council.
